Why was the Foundation Created?

The mission of the Foundation is to improve the oral health of cancer patients by educating the patient and the health care team.

The Foundation was created to further the values of lifelong learning in the profession of general dentistry.  And to provide knowledge to the public about general dentistry, oral health, and their relationship to overall general health.

As reported recently by the US Surgeon General, oral health is the gateway to many human health concerns…oral cancers, periodontal disease, diabetes, heart disease and complications of pregnancy…to name a few.

Therefore, well-informed consumers and well-educated dentists are essential keys to greater discovery of health threats, prevention and early treatment and improved wellness of the public.

How will the Foundation Achieve Its Purposes?

  • The Foundation will seek to increase the public’s knowledge and awareness through press releases, distribution of educational material about oral health and related health issues, participation in public health expositions and oral screenings for the public.
  • In October 2003, the Foundation sponsored the participation of Texas AGD members and other general dentists in the Lance Armstrong Foundation Health & Sports Exposition where oral cancer screenings were conducted and oral health information was distributed.  Approximately 10,000 people attended this event.
  • The Foundation will provide continuing dental education for general dentists, focusing primarily on two aspects…participation courses and CE courses for younger dentists who have graduated from dental school in the last five years.
  • Participation courses, which provide hands-on learning, are considered vital to advancing knowledge and excellence in the profession.  Because the nature of these courses limits the number of participants in each program and increases the cost of learning, the Foundation hopes to provide and facilitate participation courses so that more dentists will have access to them.
  • Continuing Education courses for younger dentists are essential to assure affordable access to educational programs and to perpetuate the values of lifelong learning to the new generation of general dentists.
  • Recognition of outstanding contributions in general dentistry and/or to contributions in raising consumer awareness of oral health and its relationship to general health may be considered in future plans.
