About the Speaker
Dr. Alex Barrera is a graduate of the UT School of Dentistry at Houston and currently practices at Avenue 360 Health & Wellness in Houston, Texas. Dr. Barrera's passion is public health dentistry with a focus on LGBTQ+ and Latinx health disparities. He currently serves in various roles in organizations including the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, Greater Houston Dental Society, Hispanic Dental Association, and Doctors for Change. Dr. Barrera is a founding member and current president of the Houston Equality Dental Network (HEDN), the first organized dentistry group specifically for LGBTQ+ patients and dental professionals. He founded this organization due to the oral health disparities faced by the queer community and the lack of education on LGBTQ+ topics in the dental school curriculum. Through HEDN, the group has been able to host continuing education courses for dental professionals but also give back to the local queer community by offering free dental screenings and a provider directory to help pair patients with a local LGBTQ+ dentist. Dr. Barrera is a recent graduate of the American Dental Association's Institute for Diversity in Leadership and was named one of America's Top 40 Dentists Under 40 by Incisal Edge Magazine.
The local AGD components in Texas take pride in being a trusted resource for members and they are closely monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Their top priority remains the health, safety, and well-being of our dental community. At this time, they will be proceeding with online meetings in addition to limited in-person meetings that will strictly follow CDC guidelines. They are encouraging a few simple preventative measures to limit the spread of COVID-19:
Promote the daily practice of everyday preventive actions. All attendees should practice daily good health habits to prevent the spread of any virus. Please review the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for everyday preventive actions.
Individuals who are sick are discouraged from attending in-person events or to leave events if they begin to experience symptoms. If you have symptoms of a virus, which could include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, you are discouraged from attending the event and encouraged to follow CDC guidelines. If you become sick at the event, please promptly follow CDC guidelines, and notify event organizer by email or phone. In addition, if you believe you have been in close contact with someone who has been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, you are also discouraged from attending any in-person meetings and it is recommended you follow CDC guidance on what to do when sick. Together, all of us can help stop the spread. To access resources, please visit TAGD.org/Coronavirus.
Cancelations received in writing up to five (5) business days prior to the event date will receive a refund, minus a 20% handling fee. Cancelations after this date are non-refundable.
