Opioid Prescribing for Dentists

Summary

This 2-hour course satisfies the Texas Dental Board mandate that, every 3 years, Texas Dentists permitted by the Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe controlled substances shall complete a minimum of 2 hours of continuing education in the abuse and misuse of controlled substances, opioid prescription practices and pharmacology (TSBDE rule 111.1).

Objectives: After completion of this course, participants will:
1. Understand the nature of opioid abuse in the United States
2. Appreciate how opioid prescribing patterns improve or worsen this problem
3. Be able to effectively manage pain in their patients and at the same time, limit the potential for opioid misuse.

Presenters
Dr. Ernie Luce
Dr. Luce completed dental school at the University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston in 1985. After completion of a General Practice Residency at the University of Texas HSC, San Antonio, he joined the faculty in San Antonio. Over a career of more than 30 years, Dr. Luce has focused his professional activities on the safe and effective delivery of minimal and moderate sedation.
